Star Gazing and
Night Sky Viewing Around St. George

Experience St. George’s Night Skies

Far from bright city lights, the St. George area offers some of Southern Utah’s best dark-sky viewing spots. From nearby trailheads to scenic state parks and high-elevation overlooks, your guests can enjoy stargazing, meteor watching, and peaceful desert nights under the Milky Way.

Top Viewing Locations

  • Red Mountain Trailhead Parking Lot
A relatively dark sky spot with minimal light pollution about 11 miles north of St. George on SR-18 near Dammeron Valley. Great for setting up telescopes and observing celestial objects.

  • Gunlock State Park
About 15 miles northeast of St. George, this park offers wide, dark skies ideal for stargazing, plus camping opportunities for overnight stays.

  • Warner Valley & Water Tank Staging Area
An open area south of Hurricane with less sky glow. While wind and dust can be factors, it offers broad horizons and good views when conditions are calm.

  • Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Area
Located southeast of St. George, this site is a winter viewing favorite with fewer nearby lights — though the access road is rough and better suited to 4×4 vehicles.

  • Anasazi Trailhead
A quieter winter viewing location, accessible via Santa Clara and Ivins via a short dirt road.

  • Mountain Meadows Massacre Site & Enterprise Reservoir
North of St. George, these open areas offer darker conditions and less interference from horizon light in the summer.

  • Kolob Reservoir & Cedar Breaks (Summer Options)
Higher-elevation sites that stay cool in summer with darker skies, ideal for night sessions farther from city lights.

  • Outside Virgin & Lamb’s Knoll Parking Lot
Additional spots with expansive views just past Virgin and along Kolob Terrace Road.

  • Apple Valley Abandoned Golf Course & Elephant Cove Trailhead
Lesser-known but accessible sites on old roadways offer wide views of the night sky.

  • New Kayenta Cul-de-Sac Sites
Emerging darker sky areas in the growing Kayenta neighborhood, suitable for quieter viewing.
